Santosh Kumar Gangwar is the Union Minister of State with independent charge in the Ministry of Labour and Employment in the Government of India. He was the Member of Parliament, 17th Lok Sabha for Bareilly. Santhosh was born on 1 November 1948 to Ram Lal Gangwar & Sheela Devi Gangwar in the Village Chaudhary Mohalla, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh.

Early life and Education:

Santosh Kumar Gangwar has completed his Graduation B.Sc from the Rohilkhand University in Uttar Pradesh in 1967. He attended LLB Bareilly College Agra University and the Rohilkhand University in Uttar Pradesh, in 1970.

Before joining politics, Gangwar was actively involved in the establishment of the Urban Cooperative Bank in Bareilly and held the position of its chairman since its beginning in the year 1996. In Bareilly, he has been given credit for getting several projects executed for public use such as Chaupla Railway over-bridge, a library, and a mini bypass. Married to Saubhagya Gangwar, he is blessed with two children, Apoorv Gangwar and Shruti Gangwar. He suffers from vitiligo.

Political Career:

Santhosh Gangwar started his political journey with the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP). Gangwar was jailed during the Emergency for guiding a people’s movement against the then Government. He served as a member of the Uttar Pradesh State BJP Working Committee.

In 1989, Gangwar was elected for the First time Member of Parliament, 9th Lok Sabha from Bareilly Constituency where he defeated Begum Abida Ahmed of INC’s bid to the seat.

In 1990, He was a Member of the Committee on Privileges and was a Member of the Consultative Committee. He was the Ministry of Commerce and was a Member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Transport and Tourism.

In 1991, He has re-elected MP to 10th Lok Sabha to serve a second term in Bareilly. From 1991-1996, Santhosh was the Whip of BJP, Parliamentary Party, and was the Member of Committee on the Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He was the Member of the Committee on Estimates and was the Member of the Committee on Government Assurances. He was the Member of the Consultative Committee, Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

In 1996, He contested and won the third successive Lok Sabha election and was re-elected MP to 11th Lok Sabha for a third term from Bareilly. In 1996, He held the position of General Secretary of BJP, Uttar Pradesh Unit. From 1996-1997, Gangwar was the Chairman of the Standing Committee on Agriculture.

In 1998, He has Re-elected as the MP, 12th Lok Sabha (4th term) from Bareilly. From 1998-1999, He was appointed Union Minister of State, Petroleum and Natural Gas with an additional charge of Parliamentary Affairs.

In 1999, Gangwar remained undefeated in Bareily. He was re-elected to 13th Lok Sabha for a fifth term, Special Invitee, General Purposes Committee, Lok Sabha. From 1999-2003, He was inducted into the cabinet as Union Minister of State, Science & Technology in addition, assisted Minister of Parliamentary Affairs. He was the Union Minister of State, Petroleum & Natural Gas, and an additional charge of Parliamentary Affairs.

In 2003, He was the Union Minister of State, Petroleum and Natural Gas and was the Union Minister of State, Parliamentary Affairs, Labour. From 2003-2004, He was the Union Minister of State, Heavy Industries & Public Enterprises, and an additional charge of Parliamentary Affairs.

In 2004, He held on to the seat in Bareily in the MP to the 14th Lok Sabha for the sixth time elections where he defeated Akbar Ahmed Dempi of BSP. In 2004, He was the Chief Whip of Bharatiya Janata Party in Lok Sabha and was the Member of the Committee on Petroleum & Natural Gas. He was a Member of the Business Advisory Committee.

In 2007, He was the Member of the Standing Committee on Defence and Member of the Parliamentary Forum on Water Conservation & Management. In the year 2009, He lost in the 15th Lok Sabha Elections, 2009 by a very narrow margin to Praveen Singh. Aron of INC.

In 2014, Santosh Gangwar is a Member of Parliament in the 16th Lok Sabha(7th Term) from Bareilly of BJP. In 2014, He was inducted into the cabinet s Union Minister of State, (Independent Charge), Ministry of Textiles, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation.

From 2014-2016, He was served as a Union Minister of State, (Independent Charge), Ministry of Textiles. From 2016 -2017, He was the Union Minister of State, Ministry of Finance. From 2017-2019, Santhosh was appointed as a Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Labour and Employment.

In 2019, He contested and won the Bareilly seat and defeated his nearest rival and Samajwadi Party candidate Bhagwat Saran Gangwar by a margin of 1,67,282 votes. Santhosh Gangwar has Re-elected to the MP, 17th Lok Sabha (8th term) from Bareilly Constituency, BJP. On 30 May 2019 Onwards, Santhosh Gangwar was appointed Union Minister of State, (Independent Charge), Ministry of Labour and Employment.
