Pralhad Venkatesh Joshi is an Indian politician who is the current Minister of Coal of India, with additional portfolio Parliamentary Affairs and Mines in the central cabinet under Prime Minister Modi since May 2019. He was born on 27-11-1962 to Venkatesh Joshi & Malatibai in Vijayapur (Karnataka).

Personal Life:

Shri. Joshi belongs to a humble, but respectable family. Born in 1962 as the 3rd child of Late Shri. Venkatesh Joshi (a Railway Employee) and Smt. Malatibai, completed his primary education in Railway School, High School education in New English School, Hubli, and Graduation B.A. from Sri Kadasiddeshwar Arts College, Hubli in 1983. He is married to Smt. Jyothi and blessed with three children.

Besides, his social concern, other interests of Shri. Joshi is listening and popularizing Indian Classical music and other forms of art. He plays cricket and reads extensively.

Political Career:

Shri. Pralhad Joshi, since his younger days, is a BJP activist and played important role in the party growing from strength to strength in the State of Karnataka. Dharwad Loksabha Constituency has been held by the BJP continuously since 1996. Shri. Pralhad Joshi has been acclaimed to be instrumental in BJP’s popularity in the district and the region as well. He joined the BJP and He was the President of BJP, Dharwad District in 1998.

In 1998, He was the General Secretary of BJP, Dharwad District. In 2004, He was Elected to 14th Lok Sabha from Dharwad North constituency where he defeated INC’s B.S Patil by a margin of 83078 votes. In 2009, He was re-elected for a second term by defeated Kannur Manjunath Chanappa of INC by a margin of 137663 votes. In 2013, President of BJP, Karnataka State Unit. He served in the panel of chairpersons of Lok sabha from 2014 to 2018.

In 2015, Re-elected in the 15th Lok Sabha elections where he defeated INC’s Vinay Kumar by securing 545395 votes. He has been elected to Lok Sabha in the general elections of 2004, 2009, 2014, and 2019.

He took oath as the Cabinet minister on 30 May 2019 and became the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Coal and Mines.

Achievements as Member of Parliament:

Shri. Pralhad Joshi has been an active Parliamentarian since day one. He has taken up and fought for several causes, both inside and outside the Parliament, and has succeeded in solving several issues relating to his constituency and the State, as also issues of National importance. Many of his efforts have yielded fruits. Some of the issues were taken up by Shri. Joshi is Hubli-Ankola Railway Line, Gadag-Bijapur Gauge Conversion (since completed), New Good shed at Navalur (since completed), Modernisation of Hubli Railway Workshop, Upgradation of Hubli Railway Station, Crop Insurance Scheme, Development of Hubli-Dharwad City, procurement of funds from Central Govt., to various developmental activities such as up-gradation of Hubli Airport road to International standards, and many more.

Shri. Joshi took interest and procured a Central Govt. grant of Rs.3.80 Crores for a special project entitled Baro Sadhanakerige a memorial of the very famous Poet of the state. and the Jnanapeeth Awardee, Dr. Da- Ra- Bendre. A beautiful garden in front of Dr. Bandres House stands testimony to Shri. Joshis efforts.

Positions held in Parliament:

In 14th Loksabha, he was nominated to serve on Standing Committees on
(a) Chemicals and Fertilizers
(b) Transport and Culture
(c) Consultative Committee, on Finance.

In the 15th Loksabha, he is a member of

(a) Standing Committee on Railways
(b) recently nominated to be the member of Estimates Committee
(c) Member of the Consultative Committee on Urban Development.

Shri. Pralhad Joshi was a member of the Delegation on Empowerment of Women to UNO, in which Shri. Joshi addressed the General Assembly and he was lauded for his views. He is also elected to be a Member of the Tobacco Board and functioning efficiently.

Social Inclinations:

Earlier to and even after he was elected MP, Shri. Joshi has identified himself as a man-in-service-of-mankind. A member of the R.S.S., since his young age, Shri. Joshi got himself trained in various training camps of R.S.S. He has been concerned with solving the problems of the poor and earned the name “Man of the masses”. His area of interest is vast to include socio-cultural and educational.

To enable himself to serve the people better, Shri. Joshi has caused the establishment of two NGOs based at Hubli, through which several social activities, like Health Camp, Eye-Camp, and other cultural activities, and the people are all praise for such activities. He has been conducting public contact meetings in various parts of his constituency and hears the problems of the people himself directly. Thus people recognize him as the leader at the door-steps. To contribute constructively to the cause of education, he has placed himself in an organization called Hubli education Society. Established by Shri. N. S. Hardikar, noted freedom fighter, as its Chairman which is ably running a noted Education Institute called City High School, Hubli.

Contribution to the Mid-Day Meals Scheme:

As a part of his social concern activities, he is also contributing liberally to a noted Foundation engaged in providing free mid-day meals projects in this part of the State and responsible to feed nearly one lakh school children every day.

Professional Career

Shri. Joshi is a self-made man. He did not aspire for a Govt/Company job. On the other hand, he, together with a few of his like-minded friends, has established a small scale industry, with the nomenclature Vibhava Chemicals. Because of the quality of himself and those of his partners such as honesty, integrity, etc., the industry has grown to a reasonable size. He also takes interest in espousing the cause of the business fraternity and has been serving as a Member, Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Hubli.

Covid Lockdown

He was in New Delhi in the background of Covid lockdown and he was also infected with Covid, he was not able to be present during the death of our party’s elders, well-wishers, workers, and supporters. So he visited all their homes and console their families, he was a part of their mourning and filled them with courage.
