Naveen Patnaik is the Chief Minister(CM) of Odisha State. He is the President of the Biju Janata Dal, a writer, and has authored three books. He was born on 16-October-1946 to Biju Patnaik in Cuttack. He completed his schooling at Welham Boys School in Dehradun and he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from St.Stephen College, Delhi University. He is one of the longest-serving chief ministers of any Indian state, holding the post for almost two decades. His father Biju Patnaik is the Former Chief Minister of Odisha.
In 1997, He entered into Politics and a year later founded the “Biju Janata Dal”, named after Biju Patnaik, his “Mild Mannerism”, “Stand Against Corruption” and “Pro-Poor Policies” have resulted in the development of a huge support base in Odisha, which has voted him to power in the last five consecutive terms. Like his father, he has managed to control the bureaucracy and transformed it into a machine for the development of the state.
After the death of his father Biju Patnaik, leader of the Janata Dal, Naveen Patnaik elected as a Member of the 11th Lok Sabha in the by-election from Aska Parliamentary Constituency in Odisha, India. He was a Member of the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Steel & Mines, worked as a Member of the Standing Committee on Commerce, and Member Library Committee of Parliament. Patnaik was selected as the Union Minister for Mines in the cabinet of A.B. Vajpayee. In 1998, He was elected to the 12th Lok Sabha again from the Aska Parliamentary Constituency.
In the 2000 Assembly election, BJD won the majority of seats in alliance with the BJP in Odisha Assembly elections, Patnaik resigned from the Union cabinet and was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Odisha. BJP led NDA lost the general elections in 2004, however, the coalition led by Naveen Patnaik emerged victorious in the state legislative elections and he continued as the Chief Minister. In 2009, Patnaik was elected as Chief Minister for the third consecutive term. On 21-May-2009, he was elected to Head the State Government for a third consecutive time.
Patnaik won a huge victory in both the 2014 Indian general elections and the Legislative Assembly of Odisha elections in 2014 and again became a Chief Minister of Odisha on 21 May 2014. He has won many awards. He won the “Best Administrator in India” award in 2017, “FIH President’s”, “Ideal Chief Minister” awards in 2018. He was sworn in as Odisha’s Chief Minister for the fifth consecutive term on 29-May-2019.
A book named “Naveen Patnaik” was authored by Ruben Banerjee. Patnaik won the “Hero to Animals”, “CSI E-Ratna” Awards in 2020. He played a pioneering role in the international recognition of Indian design and worked for handloom weavers to enlarge the home market for Indian textiles.
