Mr. Maturi Ashok, a highly esteemed Leader within the Indian state of Telangana, serves as the State President of the OBC Employees Union, Telangana.
EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION:
Maturi Ashok, born on 2nd March 1974 in Alair town of Telangana state, is the second child of Mrs. Maturi Janamma Bala Narasimha, with three siblings. His upbringing and education were primarily based in Alair, despite his father’s origins in Bhuvanagiri.
From his early years, he attended Seesa Mallesham School from the first to third grade. Subsequently, he pursued his studies in the Government Primary School in Alair, from the fourth to fifth grade, and completed his sixth to tenth grade in Zilla Parishad High School in 1990.
Moving forward, he successfully finished his intermediate education in 1992 at Government Junior College in Alair. Furthering his academic pursuits, he completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1995 through Osmania Open Degree in Bhuvanagiri.
Political Inclinations and Activism:
Ashok’s family background was rooted in communist ideology, although his father worked as a Government Employee. Growing up in Alair, which had become a significant center for various movements, Ashok was influenced by the Telangana peasant armed struggle Leaders, such as Arutla Kamaladevi and Katkuri Sushila Devi.
During his student days, Ashok actively participated in movements as a Member of the All India Student Federation (AISF) in 1986, aligning himself with the ideals and goals of the organization. His involvement in numerous movements and his dedication to studying and fighting for their causes became integral to his identity.
Ashok dedicated himself wholeheartedly to ensuring the success of the AISF as the Alair Town President. His unwavering commitment to the party’s goals and objectives was evident from the moment he joined until he left. Working closely with the AISF, Ashok developed a comprehensive understanding of the challenges faced by Indian students and made it his mission to address these issues through his political endeavors.
In 1989, Ashok was appointed as the AISF District Secretary of Nalgonda, which allowed him to effectively assist and address the grievances of the people while upholding the party’s principles and standards.
Ashok’s tenure with the AISF provided him with a profound insight into the challenges that students in India’s face, and he utilized his political efforts to tackle these challenges head-on. Throughout his time with the AISF, Ashok tirelessly worked towards advancing the organization’s objectives and enhancing the well-being of students nationwide.
Recognizing his dedication and humility towards the development and welfare of the people, Ashok was appointed as the AISF State Secretary of Telangana in 1990. He diligently served the people by meeting the needs of all those who sought his assistance.
CAREER IN THE COMMUNITY:
Ashok became a member of the OBC Employee Union in 1999, alongside his primary responsibilities. Due to his unwavering dedication to the welfare of the people, Ashok was promoted to the position of Chairman for the Mahatma Jyothi Rao Phule Stupam in 2018. He served with excellence, consistently considering the well-being of the people and earning their respect.
Ashok’s involvement in the Community was motivated by his dedication to the party’s growth and progress. In 2021, Ashok assumed the role of State President of the OBC Employee Union, which he carried out diligently and cautiously while performing the necessary tasks.
Despite taking on more prominent roles within the Party, Ashok always prioritized providing essential services to the people, attending to the needs of all who sought his assistance.
Leadership and Activism in Student Movements
Ashok played a pivotal role in supporting students from marginalized backgrounds, particularly SC (Scheduled Caste), ST (Scheduled Tribe), and BC (Backward Class) students residing in hostels in distant areas. He provided essential assistance to many students and actively worked to create and strengthen various movements.
He emerged as a student leader during the state government’s medical student capitation movement, which gained significant traction across the region. The movement ultimately led to the resignation of Chief Minister Neduru Malli Janardhan Reddy.
Ashok’s participation in this movement further solidified his reputation as a student leader. Undeterred by the success of the medical student capitation movement, Ashok continued to spearhead activities addressing numerous student and youth issues at both the local and state levels.
His dedication to his principles and unwavering commitment led him to collaborate with childhood friends, including Yata Sridhar, Pakala Shankar, Bejjam Somraju, Thallapalli Ganesh, Bopidi Yadagiri, and Kadari Parusha Ramulu. Additionally, Ashok found inspiration and guidance from respected peers such as Bojja Ravikumar and Goda Sriramulu. Together, they worked tirelessly, participating in various student movements, and striving to achieve meaningful results.
Professional Life:
Championing the Cause of Workers’ Rights and Justice
Maturi Ashok, a prominent leader known for his unwavering dedication to the rights of employees, emerged as a Professional within the student movement during his tenure at the Roads and Buildings Department in Ranga Reddy District, Vikarabad in 1993. He consistently stood by his fellow employees in times of injustice, advocating for their rights in the workplace and ensuring that their concerns were addressed until justice prevailed.
Ashok was transferred from Rangareddy District to Nalgonda District in 1995.
During the same year, in 1996, Ashok assumed the role of Bhongir Thaluka President, with the aim of uniting youth and their organizations to create a better future and realize the aspirations of previous generations.
In 1996, he advanced his position and became the District Vice President of Nalgonda. He actively participated in various activities and fulfilled his duties according to a code of conduct, striving for the party’s public exposure.
In 1998, Ashok was appointed as the State Secretary of Telangana. He diligently carried out his responsibilities in accordance with a code of conduct to gain recognition and authority, ensuring that every activity he undertook served the welfare of the people.
Formation of Employee Unions and Leading Movements
With a steadfast commitment to empowering government employees, Maturi Ashok played a pivotal role in establishing unions at various levels, ranging from the taluka to district and state levels. His leadership ignited numerous movements within the employment sector, exerting pressure on governments to address issues effectively and bring about favorable resolutions.
Notably, Ashok’s efforts led to the achievement of a 14.5% increase in house rent(HRA) for employees in the Bhuvanagiri area under the government of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh.
Furthermore, he spearheaded the formation of taluka-level employee committees in the joint Nalgonda district, driving the development of Backward Classes (B.C.) at both state and central levels, resulting in significant victories against policies adopted by the Central and State Governments.
Revitalizing the Telangana Movement
Ashok, who has served as the Co-Convener of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), played a crucial role in the Telangana movement. His leadership and commitment played a vital part in inspiring the youth to actively engage in the movement. Through the inclusive involvement of individuals from diverse communities during the peak of the movement, he nurtured a sense of unity and cooperation.
Due to his persistent efforts, Ashok was promoted to the position of Vice Chairman of Amaveerula Sthupam, with the expectation that he would fulfill his responsibilities for the welfare of the people, upholding the trust they had placed in him, and without any form of betrayal.
When the Honorable Chief Minister Kalwakuntla Chandrasekhara Rao failed to heed the call of the employees in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh state, Swami Goud, under whose leadership the employees stood united, announced a pen-down program. Subsequently, a grand public meeting was organized in the Siddipet area, where the employees invited the founder of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhara Rao, and officially announced the pen-down program. Fearlessly and resolutely, the Telangana movement unfolded from its inception until the attainment of statehood, employing various tactics such as dharnas (sit-ins), Rastaroko (road blockades), Bandhs (strikes), and numerous other impactful programs.
- Ashok’s participation and involvement in the Telangana Movement in 2014 were instrumental in its success. As a dedicated Activist, he fearlessly led from the front, actively participating in protests, organizing dharnas and rallies, and engaging with people at all levels. His strategic planning, organizational skills, and inclusive approach made him a pivotal figure in mobilizing public support and shaping the course of the movement. The legacy of Ashok’s contribution to the Telangana Movement continues to inspire and serve as a testament to the power of grassroots activism.
Comrades in the Movement
Throughout the Telangana movement, Maturi Ashok found steadfast support from a dedicated group of individuals who shared his vision and worked tirelessly to achieve their collective goals. These influential figures included Dr. Merugu Madan Mohan, Amada Chittaranjan, Mandadi Upender Red, D Jaganmohan Prasad, Pusa Srinivas, Kota Balaraj, Kata Chinnappa, Ranga Rao Banothu Balan Sahadev, Mrs. Maturi Yashoda, Manikyamma, Lalita, Yashoda, Bhagya, Shailaja, Kota Narasimhaswamy, Nalla Krishna, Vallabhoju Brahmachari, Qadir Anand, Ch. Srinivas, Deva Naik, and several others. Their unwavering dedication ensured the continuous progress of the movement.
Commemorating the Martyrs
In honor of the student martyrs who sacrificed their lives during the Telangana movement, the decision was made to construct a Martyrs’ Stupa. A committee, known as the Martyrs’ Stupa Construction Committee, was established to oversee this significant project.
Ms. Akula Jayamma assumed the role of chairperson, with Maturi Ashok serving as the Vice ChairPerson, alongside Amadha Chittaranjan and seven other members. The construction of the Martyrs’ Stupa received generous financial contributions from Telangana activist Jitta Balakrishna Reddy, who also lent invaluable support to the committee’s endeavors.
Notable Achievements:
- In a commendable display of commitment to educational equity, justice was delivered to 300 students pursuing the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) program in the Alair. The examination results for the tenth class were meticulously reviewed, ensuring fairness and impartiality in the evaluation process.
- Demonstrating strong leadership and a deep reverence for the sacrifices made by martyrs, Ashok, as a Vice Chairman, spearheaded the construction of the Martyrs Stupa in Bhuvanagiri town. This monumental structure serves as a lasting tribute to those brave individuals who laid down their lives in service to our nation.
- In a time of unprecedented crisis caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic, Ashok’s dedicated leadership took decisive action to address the needs of underprivileged communities. A comprehensive and compassionate approach was adopted to ensure the distribution of essential goods and services to those most affected by the pandemic.
- By providing critical support to vulnerable populations, Ashok exemplified their unwavering commitment to social welfare and demonstrated solidarity with those facing immense hardships during these challenging times.
