Dundra Kumaraswamy: A Champion for Backward Classes and Social Justice
Dundra Kumaraswamy is a prominent and unwavering leader in both Telugu states, recognized for his lifelong dedication to advancing social justice and empowering marginalized communities, particularly the Backward Classes (BCs). His journey, marked by tireless service, resilience, and selflessness, has positioned him as a true advocate for the underprivileged. Unlike many in today’s politics, Kumaraswamy is driven by ideology rather than power, tirelessly working toward a more equitable society where BCs have equal representation and opportunities across all sectors.
A Lifelong Dedication to the BC Movement
Born in June 1982 to D. Kanakaiah and Odamma in Bellampally, Adilabad district, Kumaraswamy grew up in a socially and economically disadvantaged Yadav community. Despite their lack of formal education, his parents were committed to ensuring their children received a good education. Tragedy struck when his father passed away, leaving his elder brother Sadanandam to support the family by working in a coal mine, despite the meager wages. Driven to secure financial stability, Kumaraswamy pursued a diploma in pharmacy, B-pharmacy, later completing a master’s in clinical research and working as a scientist in a prominent pharmaceutical company. However, he remained committed to social causes, using his earnings to fund initiatives benefiting disadvantaged communities.
Establishing BC Dal and His Journey into Social Work
As Kumaraswamy grew increasingly aware of the systemic discrimination faced by BC communities, he felt a responsibility to advocate for their rights. During the Telangana statehood movement, he played an active role, further inspiring his dedication to social justice. In 2016, he founded BC Dal, an organization dedicated to fostering leadership and development within BC communities, promoting awareness, and advocating for social, economic, and political empowerment. His experience as a lawyer has enabled him to offer legal support to those facing injustices, enhancing his ability to serve BC communities more effectively.
His path to social activism was inspired by personal experiences, including witnessing a leprosy patient being denied entry to a bus. This incident led him to join the Council of Hansen’s Social Welfare, where he provided medical and financial support to marginalized individuals, such as AIDS and leprosy patients, and organized skill-building programs for impoverished women. His contributions have earned him praise from figures like Lok Satta founder Jayaprakash Narayan and a Governor’s Award.
Advocating for Rights and Raising Awareness Through Media
Kumaraswamy’s commitment to social awareness is evident through his work as an editor of “Tholipaluku” and “Awaaz Telangana,” where he addresses issues affecting BCs and advocates for their rights without any profit motive. He also spearheads the “BC Dharma Porata,” advocating for increased reservation, a separate BC ministry, and the representation of BCs in various sectors. By organizing intellectuals, community leaders, and activists from across the nation, he has created a platform for BCs to demand their rightful place in society.
A Vision for Social and Political Empowerment
Kumaraswamy envisions a society where BCs are empowered, united, and free from systemic discrimination. Through BC Dal, he has dedicated himself to fostering a strong sense of self-esteem and social consciousness within BC communities, helping them overcome social barriers and secure leadership roles. His efforts to unite BCs under one banner exemplify his commitment to achieving a future where equality and opportunity are accessible to all.
In Dundra Kumaraswamy, BC communities find a leader who stands unwaveringly for their rights, driven by a commitment to social equity and justice. His legacy continues to inspire many as he tirelessly works to achieve a society where BCs have equal opportunities, representation, and respect across all areas of life.
Championing Science and Justice: A Legacy of Advocacy
Throughout my career, I have dedicated myself to two intersecting fields: clinical research and social justice. As a Scientist in Clinical Research at a prominent pharmaceutical company from 2005 to 2014, I contributed to significant advancements in drug development and clinical trials. My role involved ensuring the safety and effectiveness of pharmaceutical products through rigorous testing and data analysis. Parallel to my scientific work, I provided legal support to underprivileged communities, leveraging my expertise to advocate for fair treatment, especially in health-related issues.
In 2017, I founded “Tholipaluku,” a fortnightly Telugu newspaper aimed at raising awareness about the issues and achievements of Backward Classes (BCs). As the Founder and Editor, I have used this platform to highlight the challenges faced by marginalized communities and advocate for their rights. Tholipaluku serves to inform and engage the community, promoting positive changes and holding unethical practices accountable.
My involvement in the Telangana Movement from 2008 to 2014 with the Private Employees Joint Action Committee showcased my commitment to the region’s quest for statehood. I worked tirelessly to support the movement, organizing events and participating in protests to amplify the voices of private employees and advocate for their rights. This period was marked by a deep dedication to social justice and regional development.
In 2016, I established BC-DAL (Backward Classes Development and Leadership) to address the needs and aspirations of Backward Classes. Guided by the legacies of social reformers like Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, BC-DAL focuses on improving educational access, economic opportunities, and political representation for BCs. Through various initiatives, including skill development and self-employment training, we aim to empower BC communities and create a more inclusive society.

Dundra Kumaraswamy Advocates for Enhanced BC Rights and Welfare
National BC Dal President Dundra Kumaraswamy has called on Telangana Chief Minister Shri Anumala Revanth Reddy to honor the promises made to the Backward Classes (BCs) during the Congress party’s recent assembly election campaign. In a meeting at the Secretariat on Monday, Kumaraswamy submitted a detailed three-page petition that outlined several key demands aimed at uplifting the BC community. Among these were calls for increasing reservations for BCs in local bodies to 42 percent, implementing sub-caste-wise reservations, and allocating five percent reservation for nomadic castes. Kumaraswamy further urged the establishment of special financial corporations dedicated to BC castes and the phased fulfillment of all commitments outlined in the party’s manifesto.
In another significant meeting, Kumaraswamy, accompanied by other BC leaders, met with Telangana Panchayat Raj Minister Smt Seetakka to push for an increase in BC reservations for upcoming local body elections, raising the current 23 percent to 42 percent. He stressed the need for better political representation for the substantial BC population in Telangana, arguing that the current allocation limits leadership opportunities at the grassroots level. Minister Seetakka responded positively, assuring that the government would take the demand into serious consideration.
Further, Kumaraswamy advocated for the immediate implementation of a BC sub-plan, proposing an allocation of Rs. 20,000 crore annually to fulfill a total commitment of Rs. 1 lakh crore over five years, as promised during the elections. Alongside BC leaders Sai, Ayan, Satish, Ramana, Srinivas, and Mallesh, Kumaraswamy presented these demands to Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, urging the adoption of a model similar to that of Bihar for BC welfare and development.

These ministries would play a crucial role in formulating targeted policies, channeling resources, and implementing development programs specifically designed for the upliftment of BC communities. Swamy believes that such dedicated ministries are essential for ensuring sustained and focused attention on the issues that matter most to BCs, and he remains committed to this cause.

He believes that comprehensive and accurate data on the demographic composition of BCs is vital for shaping effective policies. Swamy is determined to bridge the gaps that have historically hindered BCs from achieving parity with other communities.
Sustained Efforts in Implementing Comprehensive Activities for BC Welfare
