My academic journey began at Northala High School, progressed through Government Junior College, and culminated in a BA, a B.Ed from Annamalai University, and an MA from Sri Krishnadevaraya University.
My teaching career commenced in 1991 at B.Pappuru Mandal Primary School, where I dedicated myself to nurturing young minds. As a Literacy Organizer for Mudigubba Mandal, I spearheaded numerous literacy initiatives, including night classes for adults.
In 1998, I was appointed Principal at Kotapalli ZP High School, where I implemented strategic changes to enhance the quality of education. My leadership not only improved academic standards but also created a supportive community around the school.
Recognizing the urgent need for environmental conservation, I founded the Green Bharath Foundation in 1991. This initiative focuses on promoting sustainable living and ecological balance, having planted over 1.5 million saplings. The foundation educates communities about the importance of trees, championing their role in air purification, climate regulation, and biodiversity preservation. My commitment extends beyond planting trees; I empower communities through educational programs on sustainable practices and environmental awareness. I have initiated health camps, established Eco-clubs in schools, and advocated for plastic-free environments, working tirelessly to engage local populations in these efforts.
A notable endeavor was my leadership in restoring the Chitravati River, where I organized a clean-up initiative involving local community members. My focus on combating plastic pollution highlights the importance of collective action in environmental protection. Upon my arrival at Kotapalli ZP High School, I revitalized the neglected institution by engaging the community, securing funding for renovations, and transforming the campus into a green oasis. My hands-on approach to environmental conservation and education serves as an inspiring model for future generations. I exemplify the role of an educator who transcends traditional teaching to become a catalyst for environmental and community change. My lifelong commitment to education and sustainability continues to inspire those around me, forging a path toward a greener and more educated future.

He believes that just as soldiers defend the nation, every Indian must take up the cause of preserving nature, warning that the world faces imminent peril if we fail to act.
Dr. Shankar Narayana stresses that life-giving resources, such as clean air and water, are vital for the survival of all living beings, and their preservation is essential for the country’s security and future well-being. According to him, the looming environmental crisis cannot be solved by wealth alone; instead, individuals must step forward and actively support organizations like Green Bharat to save the planet.
Reflecting on the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Shankar Narayana points out that while humans struggled, animals and birds thrived, revealing the stark contrast between human selfishness and nature’s resilience. He calls for humanity to abandon self-centered behaviors and join forces to protect the environment—not for personal gain, but for the sake of global welfare and future generations.

Green Bharath Foundation: A Mission Towards a Sustainable Future
The Green Bharath Foundation, founded with a deep commitment to environmental preservation, is a beacon for promoting sustainable living and ecological balance. Under the leadership of Shankar Narayana, the foundation aims to educate, inspire, and mobilize communities to take collective responsibility for the environment. Through various initiatives, the foundation seeks to empower individuals, especially students, and farmers, to make informed decisions that benefit the planet and future generations.
The Vision of the Green Bharath Foundation
To create a sustainable and Eco-friendly India, every citizen must be empowered to play an active role in environmental protection and ecological preservation. This vision involves adopting green practices in daily life, such as reducing waste, conserving water, and utilizing renewable energy sources. Sustainable farming techniques that minimize environmental impact and promote biodiversity are crucial for long-term agricultural health. By fostering a culture of environmental responsibility, we can collectively work toward a healthier, greener future, ensuring that natural resources are preserved for future generations.
The Mission of the Green Bharath Foundation
The foundation’s mission is to lead impactful environmental initiatives that promote afforestation, conservation, and sustainable living. Emphasizing the critical role trees play in maintaining ecological balance, the Green Bharath Foundation aims to plant, protect, and nurture trees while raising awareness about their immense value to the environment and human health.
Shankar Narayana’s Concept: Trees as Pillars of Life
At the heart of Shankar Narayana’s environmental philosophy lies the concept that trees are the key pillars of life. Trees do not merely beautify our surroundings; they are essential to the survival of all living beings. They serve humanity and the environment in profound ways by purifying the air we breathe, filtering the water we drink, and providing shelter for over 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity. They are natural air purifiers, water cleaners, and climate stabilizers.
Major Benefits of Growing and Protecting Trees
Shankar Narayana and the Green Bharath Foundation stress the multifaceted benefits of trees:
Trees absorb pollutants, improving the quality of the air we breathe and mitigating the effects of urban pollution.
Trees play a crucial role in the water cycle, filtering rainwater and preventing soil erosion, which in turn preserves water quality.
By absorbing carbon dioxide, trees help cool our climate and combat global warming, reducing the overall ecological imbalance.
Trees are home to a wide variety of species, providing habitats for birds, insects, and mammals, which sustain the delicate balance of ecosystems.
Trees enhance the quality of soil by preventing erosion, improving fertility, and sustaining agricultural productivity.
Promoting Environmental Stewardship
Through the Green Bharath Foundation, Shankar Narayana strives to instill a sense of responsibility in communities, encouraging people to become active stewards of the environment. By organizing tree-planting drives, environmental education programs, and sustainable living workshops, the foundation is committed to creating a greener, healthier planet.
The Green Bharath Foundation’s holistic approach aims to bridge the gap between people and nature, guiding them toward sustainable choices and fostering an enduring respect for the natural world. With Shankar Narayana’s leadership, the foundation seeks to transform this passion into widespread action, planting the seeds for a future where humanity and nature thrive in harmony.
Promoting Environmental Awareness:
The primary goal of Green Bharath is to encourage everyone to recognize their responsibility in protecting the environment. The foundation aims to conduct environmental conservation programs, particularly in schools, to inform students about the importance of environmental protection from an early age. Each school will maintain Eco-clubs that foster environmental stewardship among the youth.
Organizing Environmental Training Programs:
Green Bharath organizes lectures, conferences, and seminars to educate communities about the significance of environmental protection. These events are funded by environmental programs and focus on sustainable practices that can be implemented at a grassroots level.
Tree Planting and Green Initiatives:
Trees are the pillars of life, and Green Bharath actively promotes the planting of trees through its “Green Focus” initiatives. For the past 30 years, the foundation has planted over 500,000 trees, transforming barren lands into lush green spaces with the support of the public. These efforts have been instrumental in creating village green belts, and school gardens, and enhancing the overall environment.
Inspiration from Environmental Leaders:
Inspired by the movements of environmental activists like Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, Medha Patkar, Anna Hazare, Sundarlal Bahuguna, and Baba Amte, Shankar Narayana encourages individuals to participate in conservation activities and learn from these environmental pioneers.
Supporting Farmers with Sustainable Practices:
Green Bharath aims to transform the agricultural landscape by organizing seminars for farmers that highlight the benefits of organic farming over pesticide-based agriculture. By promoting sustainable farming practices like vermicomposting and the use of bio-pesticides, the foundation helps farmers adopt Eco-friendly methods that are both productive and environmentally sustainable.
Addressing Drought and Water Scarcity in Rayalaseema:
Recognizing the challenges of water scarcity in drought-prone areas like Rayalaseema, Andhra Pradesh, the foundation is focused on planting drought-resistant trees and promoting sustainable agriculture. Green Bharath also raises awareness about the importance of conserving water and finding alternative solutions to the region’s agricultural challenges, as monsoons are unreliable, leaving over 50% of farmland uncultivated.
Combating the Harmful Effects of Plastic:
The use of plastic has had a devastating effect on the environment, from clogging drainage systems and causing disease to contaminating rivers, oceans, and farmlands. Green Bharath advocates for a plastic-free future, educating the public about the dangers of plastic and encouraging a shift towards Eco-friendly alternatives. The foundation’s ultimate goal is to create cleaner streets, towns, and villages, and protect aquatic and terrestrial life from the harmful impact of plastic waste.
School Eco-Clubs and Green Gardens:
Green Bharath aims to transform every school in India into a “Green School” by establishing Eco-clubs and school gardens. These initiatives not only teach students about environmental conservation but also reward passionate students with incentives like 10% additional marks in their final exams and prizes for exceptional contributions to environmental education.
Health Camps and Awareness Programs:
The foundation conducts health camps and awareness programs focused on population control, literacy, cleanliness, and overall public health. The use of plastic in food consumption, for example, can lead to harmful diseases, and Green Bharath spreads awareness about these risks through educational initiatives.
Village Green Belt Programs:
Green Bharath envisions every village in India having its green belt—a community-driven effort to plant and maintain trees, ensuring environmental protection at a grassroots level. This project aims to provide oxygen-rich environments and foster a culture of greenery and sustainability in every corner of the nation.
Farmer and Women Welfare:
At its core, Green Bharath is dedicated to the welfare of farmers and women. By promoting sustainable farming practices, preventing farmer suicides, and providing women with opportunities to contribute to environmental conservation, the foundation works toward a more just and sustainable society.
Building a Greener, Cleaner India:
Green Bharath Foundation is committed to mobilizing every citizen to actively participate in the movement toward a greener India. By establishing Eco-clubs, organizing health camps, and focusing on environmental education, Green Bharath aims to transform the country into a global leader in sustainability. The ultimate goal is to ensure that every village, school, and city in India contributes to a cleaner, greener future for all.
The foundation recognizes that environmental protection is a collective responsibility, and through its diverse initiatives, it strives to create a sustainable, plastic-free world where both nature and humanity can thrive.

This initiative is part of the broader Intinta Chettu Ooranta Vanam Mahatsavam Program, which aims to enhance greenery and promote biodiversity in local communities. The program encourages villagers to participate in tree planting and maintenance efforts, fostering a collective commitment to environmental stewardship and creating healthier, greener spaces for future generations.
