In 2006, amidst growing concern from the residents of Karveti Nagar, Dr. Ravi Raju was reassigned to his hometown to continue his medical practice. Munemma, a 45-year-old woman from the large Dalit district of Karveti Nagar, had been suffering from an enormous K. barian cyst (uterine tumor) weighing up to 70 kg for the past 20 years. This massive tumor severely impeded her ability to walk and manage daily activities. Despite the critical nature of her condition, local doctors were reluctant to proceed with surgery.

When her plight was brought to public attention through the news, Primary Medical Officer Dr. Ravi Raju took immediate action. He assessed Munemma’s condition, engaged with higher authorities, and arranged for her transfer to Tirupati Hospital for advanced treatment. However, due to the cyst’s considerable size, surgical intervention was deemed too risky, and no treatment was performed there.

Undeterred, Dr. Ravi Raju brought Munemma back to Karveti Nagar, where he employed a non-surgical approach to address her condition. Over the course of two months, he successfully used syringes to extract 70 kg of tumor fluid, providing her with significant relief. He was the first person to educate and publicize government doctors, private practitioners, and the general public about COVID-19. His proactive approach and unwavering commitment to public health were instrumental in the early dissemination of vital information about the virus, establishing him as a key figure in India’s initial response to the pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Ravi Raju played a crucial role in coordinating the response in Tirupati of Chittoor district. He engaged in detailed discussions with political leaders, legislators, and a five-member team from the medical association in Tirupati to devise daily preventive measures for those presenting with COVID-19 symptoms and strategies to curb its spread. As a result of these discussions, five COVID-19 centers were established in Karvetinagar. Dr. Ravi Raju oversaw the logistics of transporting oxygen cylinders and COVID-19 kits to these centers.
