Mr. B.S. Ramulu is a highly distinguished Social Philosopher, Maha Mahopadhyaya, who has significantly impacted the literary world as a novelist and acclaimed storyteller. Ramulu was the First Chairman of the Telangana State BC Commission from 2016 to 2022.
EARLY LIFE AND EDUCATION:
On the 23rd of August 1949, Bethi Sriramulu famously known as B.S Ramulu was born and raised by the couple Mr. Late Bethi Narayana( (Weaver, Bombay Textile Worker) and Mrs. Late. Bethi Laxmi Raju(Beedi Worker) in Jagital town of Jagtial District in the Indian state of Telangana.
Ramulu’s early education started at Ayyoru Panthulu when he was just ten years old. He continued his studies at Markaji School, from the third grade in June 1957. It was during this time that Ramulu began to develop an interest in reading and studying, encouraged by his teachers’ praise and the support of his classmates.
In 1960, Ramulu joined Multipurpose High School in the sixth standard, where he received a disciplined academic education under the exemplary headmaster, Muddu Ramakrishnaiah. Ramakrishnaiah studied the educational systems of many countries like England and was able to introduce a new educational system in Jagityala. Ramulu excelled under this system and went on to pass the 12th CEC in 1967 with the first distinction.
Ramulu’s college education took place between 1970-1974 with D.O.L., B.O.L. Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Sanskrit Andhra College in Dharmapuri, Karimnagar District. Later, he trained as a Telugu scholar from 1979-1980 at the BED College in Hanmakonda, Kakatiya University.
Throughout Ramulu’s education, he faced numerous challenges, including financial difficulties that prevented him from pursuing higher education. Despite these obstacles, he persevered and eventually went on to achieve great success.
Ramulu’s dedication to education and his perseverance in the face of adversity is a testament to his character and his commitment to the betterment of society. His experiences serve as an inspiration to others, reminding us of the importance of education and the power of determination in achieving our goals.
B.S Ramulu as a RSS Chief Trainer (1967-1972):
Mr. B.S. Ramulu has a long-standing history with the RSS, starting in 1963 when he was in the ninth standard. As a young student, he was drawn to the RSS due to the various activities and exercises they taught, such as movement and mental exercises, as well as the practice of Surya Namaskar.
Over the years, Ramulu’s involvement with the RSS deepened, and from 1967 to 1972, he served as the Chief Shikshak of RSS, leading efforts to establish branches of the organization in Jagityala Dharmapuri.
During this time, Ramulu worked tirelessly to expand the reach of the RSS, using his leadership skills and knowledge of the organization’s principles to build a strong foundation for its growth. Through his work with the RSS, Ramulu’s self-confidence grew, and he became a respected figure in his community. Today, his legacy lives on as a testament to the power of the RSS to inspire and transform lives.
B.S. Ramulu as a Telangana Activist(1996-2014):
Between 1996 and 2014, B.S. Ramulu dedicated himself to the Telangana Movement as an activist, actively participating in numerous social programs and demonstrations to advocate for the formation of a new state. His involvement in the movement was marked by his participation in events such as the Million March, Bike Rallies, and Dharans. Throughout this period, Ramulu played a crucial role in fighting for the creation of Telangana by raising awareness and mobilizing people in support of the cause.
The increasing number of educated people in Telangana led to a rise in unemployment from 1964, although the opening of hundreds of schools in villages through Gram Panchayat and Zilla Parishad systems provided employment opportunities for many as teaching jobs. Additionally, Palamuru labor was employed through canal digging, and local students were able to secure work as work charge employees and temporary masons, but permanent jobs were scarce. This situation led to the widespread movement for a separate Telangana from 1968 to 1971.
Despite the challenging circumstances, Ramulu was determined to work and continue his studies. He pursued his degree from Dharmapuri Sayan College, as he deemed it impractical to study with his juniors at the local Jagityala Students. He successfully completed his D.O.L. and B.O.L. from the college, proving his determination and resilience.
As a Newspaper Agent:
In addition to his involvement in the Telangana Movement, Ramulu also worked as a Newspaper Agent, contributing to the dissemination of information and the spread of awareness about the movement. His efforts as an activist and newspaper agent reflect his engagement in advancing the cause of Telangana and working towards a better future for the people of the region.
Ramulu was a man of many talents and passions, whose life was dedicated to spreading modern literary concepts and advocating for Telangana movements. He worked as a Newspaper Agent and beedi company manager in the catchment area of Godavari, specifically the Dharmapuri Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple. This area was home to a significant number of Brahmin families, and Ramulu organized literature meetings there, where he introduced the masses to Yuva Bharati’s publications.
His exceptional work in spreading literary awareness and educating people about modern concepts was widely recognized and appreciated.
Despite being a student at Dharmapuri Sayan College, Ramulu remained an active participant in Telangana movements, and he helped organize bandhs and sit-ins at the college for two months. His guarantee to the cause was unyielding, and he continued his involvement even after college.
As a Telugu Pandit:
Ramulu’s adherence to literary and political activism was rewarded when he was selected for the Telugu Pandit job in the Adilabad district on DOL qualification by the Zilla Parishad. He believed that this would be his big break and was excited about the government job. However, despite many others getting the position, Ramulu was not offered the job, leaving him devastated.
During this time, Ramulu continued to work in the bidi company in Dharmapuri and kept up his literary and Telangana activism. Despite his disappointment and setbacks, Ramulu remained undeterred and continued to work towards his goals. He faced further challenges when he was unable to travel to Adilabad as he had to wait for the buses that carried newspapers from his agency.
Ramulu’s story is one of resilience, perseverance, and unchangeable conserve to his beliefs. Despite the obstacles he faced, he continued to fight for what he believed in, leaving a lasting legacy in both the literary and political spheres.
As a Hostel Warden:
Ramulu landed a job as a Hostel Warden in December 1975. However, it was only in 1976 that he stumbled upon Ambedkar’s books while browsing through the hostel library. The books that particularly stood out to him were Kula Nirmulana, Endluri Chinnaya’s biography of Ambedkar, and Boi Bheemanna’s Struggle for Dharma. These books sparked a new perspective in Ramulu, leading him to generate fresh ideas.
Unfortunately, despite the limited budget of Rs 30 per month allotted for food expenses for the hostel students in 1976, the amount of 2 rupees per month allocated for soaps and hair oils were deemed insufficient. It was impossible for the budget of 30 rupees per student per month to cover the cost of soaps and hair oils with such a meager allocation. Furthermore, the budget was not even enough to feed the four staff members working in the kitchen responsible for cooking for 25 people.
Ramulu’s exposure to Ambedkar’s books was a significant turning point in his life, and it provided him with new insights and inspiration. This situation emphasizes the need for policymakers to consider the minimum budget allocation necessary for essential items and services in such settings to ensure the well-being of the individuals residing there. Ultimately, it is essential to prioritize the allocation of sufficient resources to enable the delivery of the most basic and necessary services to those who need them.
